==Origin of the gens==
The ''nomen Marius'' appears to be derived from the Oscan ''praenomen Marius'', in which case the family is probably of Sabine or Sabellic origin.〔〔George Davis Chase, "The Origin of Roman Praenomina", in ''Harvard Studies in Classical Philology'', vol. VIII (1897).〕
